Bill Oddie helps animal welfare charity OneKind share their message about the cruelty of snaring.
Scottish animal protection charity OneKind has commissioned a new film, starring popular broadcaster and naturalist Bill Oddie, which demonstrates the extent of animal snaring in the Scottish countryside. Snares are indiscriminate traps that can catch protected animals such as badgers and otters, and even domestic animals like cats and dogs. Snares are cruel and can cause great pain and distress to the animals they catch.
A recent System 3 poll by OneKind found that 77% of people in Scotland want an end to snaring.
The film, entitled “Snares uncovered: Killers in the countryside”, shows Bill’s disbelief at the number of animal snares placed on a typical estate, as well as his shock at the indiscriminate nature of these cruel devices.
Bill is also fronting an online campaign – Love Animals, Hate Snares – that allows visitors to the OneKind website to send an e-Card to their local MSPs asking them to vote for an end to snaring.
Bill Oddie said:
“My involvement with OneKind began when they asked me to lend my support to their new movement, (I had previously known the organisation as Advocates for Animals) and I’m pleased to support what I feel is a fresh approach to improving the welfare of animals. I am concerned that we humans are at a risk of losing our natural bond with animals, and that really we are the root of the problem – our behaviours and our thoughtlessness – not the animals. As OneKind put it so succinctly we are actually all OneKind, we all think and feel and experience pain and joy, and things will only improve when we appreciate this. I also felt that I wanted to take even more of hands-on approach to campaigning for animals – something you may know I’ve spent a great deal of my life doing – and I hoped that by lending my support to the end snaring campaign I would make a real difference. Please pass on the links to the Snares Uncovered film to friends and family, or take part in the “Love Animals, Hate Snares” campaign by making used of the resources on this OneKind website.”
Fiona Ogg, Chief Executive of OneKind, said:
“We can’t think Bill enough for the passion and commitment he has shown to this campaign to end the use of snares in Scotland. Over 4,000 OneKind supporters have contributed around 7,000 actions to this campaign, which is a fantastic response. We have already brought sufficient pressure to bear on MSPs to achieve important concessions and the campaign will go on. This demonstrates the real difference that individual supporters can make to our campaigns, and we want to encourage more people to sign up to OneKind and create a better world for all animals.
